From electoral data platforms to national digital infrastructure, OCL reflects on a year of deep impact and future-facing innovation.

Open Cities Lab (OCL) is proud to release its 2024/2025 Annual Report, a year of intentional growth defined by human-centred design and collaborative systems.

In 2024, millions of South Africans went to the polls. Behind the scenes, one of our tools, MyCandidate, helped voters access clear, reliable information about their local candidates. At the same time, we were laying the foundations for MzansiXchange, a national data exchange ecosystem that is set to transform how cities deliver services.

Our work spanned 13 new tools, 5 city data strategies, and 18 partnerships: each one contributing to more inclusive, responsive, and future-ready African cities.

Key highlights include:

  • The nationwide deployment of MyCandidate during South Africa’s 2024 elections
  • Expanded storytelling, training, and data support to journalists across the continent through Africa Data Hub
  • Deepened partnerships with cities like Cape Town, eThekwini, and municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal through MijiBora
  • Developed the technical and governance blueprint for MzansiXchange, set to pilot in late 2025

This year also marked a strategic turning point. We finalised our Scale Strategy 2030, introduced a co-leadership model, implemented a four-day workweek, and launched our inaugural graduate programme. These changes ensure that as our tools reach more people, our organisation stays grounded in inclusion, equity, and sustainability.

“We’re not just scaling tools; we’re scaling impact,” said Megan Wadge, CEO. “That means empowering residents, strengthening governments, and co-creating digital public infrastructure that works for the people it serves.”
