Cape Town’s Electricity Asset Management team lacked the resources to inspect and maintain its many substations and wasn’t fully using available data to identify where attention was most needed. Together, we co-designed the Spatial Data Analytical Tool, an interactive system that helps the City leverage existing data to better inspect, maintain and replace electrical infrastructure. By factoring in community vulnerability and past service gaps, the tool enables fairer, data-driven decisions that reduce outages and improve service quality. Now embedded in daily operations, it supports smarter planning and more equitable access to reliable electricity across Cape Town.
